His mother was Esther Stoddard, daughter of Solomon Stoddard, a minister of Northhampton, Massachusetts. Jonathan, their only son, was the fifth of eleven children. He was trained for college by his father and by his elder sisters, all of whom received an excellent education. He entered Yale in 1716 at just under the age of thirteen. During his college studies, he kept note books labelled "The Mind," "Natural Science" (containing a discussion of the atomic theory), "The Scriptures" and "Miscellanies". He was graduated at the age of seventeen September 1720 as valedictorian and head of his class, having mastered Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. Soon after he was converted to Jesus Christ. The two years after his graduation, he spent in New Haven studying theology. In 1722 to 1723, he was for eight months "stated supply" (a clergyman employed to supply a pulpit for a definite time, but not settled as a pastor) of a small Presbyterian Church in New York City. The church invited him to remain, but he declined the call. On February 5, 1727 he was ordained minister at Northampton and assistant to his grandfather, Solomon Stoddard. He was a student minister, not a visiting pastor, his rule being thirteen hours of study a day. In the same year, he married Sarah Pierpont, then aged seventeen, daughter of James Pierpont a founder of Yale. Solomon Stoddard died on February 11th, 1729 leaving to his grandson Jonathan Edwards the difficult task of the sole ministerial charge of one of the largest and wealthiest congregations in the colony, and one proud of its morality, its culture and its reputation. Edwards served pastorates in Massachusetts during what has been called the "Great Awakening," a revival that began in 1734 and lasted for about ten years. Edwards is probably best known for a sermon he preached entitled, "Sinners In The Hands Of An Angry God". He died in 1758. ********************************************************************************************* PLUS – as a Bonus “A Treasury of Sovereign Grace and Devotional Writings”Worth Hundreds of Dollars – But Worth Far More SpirituallyAbout 150 Articles and Books by about 40 Authors – including writings by Walter Cash, W J Berry, Thomas Boston, Edward Bounds, Newman Hall, David Harsha, John James, J.R.
